Morning Edition: Deadly series of attacks by Israel launched on Gaza

Chicago – March 18, 2025

Israel has launched deadly new attacks on Gaza, ending a fragile ceasefire that began nearly two months ago to stop over a year of fighting.

Palestinian doctors reported at least a dozen people killed and many more injured, but the actual number of deaths may be over 200.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, said the strikes happened because Hamas refused to release more hostages. So far, only 33 had been freed during the first phase of the ceasefire deal made in January.

Katz warned that if Hamas doesn’t release all hostages, Israel will respond with even more force, saying, “We will not stop fighting until all hostages return and all war goals are met.”

The White House confirmed that Israel informed the Trump administration before the attacks. A spokeswoman said President Trump will not tolerate threats from Hamas, Iran, or other groups, warning, “All hell will break loose.”

These attacks seem to have ended the ceasefire agreement that started on January 19, 2025, which was brokered by both the Biden and Trump administrations.
