Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., spoke out on Wednesday night after a difficult election for Democrats, which included a Republican win for the presidency and a GOP majority in the Senate.
Schumer emphasized the importance of working together in the Senate, saying, “The only way to get things done in the Senate is through bipartisan legislation while maintaining our principles — and the next two years will be no different.”
He praised Vice President Kamala Harris for her “historic candidacy” despite her loss to President-Elect Donald Trump, saying she inspired millions across the nation. Schumer acknowledged that several Senate races remain too close to call in key states like Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Arizona.
As votes were counted, Republicans were expected to take control of the Senate after picking up seats in states such as West Virginia, Montana, and Ohio, without losing any seats they already held.
“Senate Democrats remain committed to our values and to working with our Republican colleagues to deliver for the American people,” Schumer said, pledging that his party would keep fighting for its goals, even in the new political landscape.
