Deadly Fires Rage Across Los Angeles, Residents Urged to Prepare
A devastating series of fires has swept across the Los Angeles region, destroying thousands of homes and buildings, and claiming the lives of at least 27 people. Despite progress made by firefighters, authorities warn that strong winds expected to return next week could rekindle the flames and spread the destruction.
Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley cautioned that a large amount of dry fuel, combined with low humidity and harsh Santa Ana winds, could lead to further devastation. Crowley urged residents to clear brush within 200 feet of their homes, emphasizing that flying embers from wildfires can destroy homes over a mile away.
The fires have reduced neighborhoods along the Pacific Coast and near the San Gabriel Mountains to ash and rubble. Over 12,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed, and as many as 200,000 people were forced to flee their homes at the height of the fires. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place for thousands of residents.
Authorities are working tirelessly to contain the fires and protect residents. Chief Crowley appealed to residents to provide first responders with a “fighting chance” to save homes if the fires spread.
