Chicago – May 23, 2025

On May 21, 2025, IndiGo flight 6E2142, carrying 227 passengers, made an emergency landing in Srinagar after encountering severe turbulence caused by a sudden hailstorm. The flight, which was traveling from Delhi to Srinagar, suffered damage to its nose section during the intense weather.

The pilot swiftly declared an emergency and contacted Srinagar Air Traffic Control, securing priority clearance for the landing. Despite challenging conditions, including poor visibility and strong winds, the pilot successfully landed the aircraft at 6:30 PM, ensuring the safety of all aboard.

Passenger reactions were intense, with videos on social media capturing screams and prayers as the plane shook violently mid-air. Some passengers reported items falling from overhead compartments due to the turbulence. Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose described the event as a “near-death experience” and praised the pilot’s skillful handling of the situation.

IndiGo confirmed the safe landing, and the aircraft was declared Aircraft on Ground (AOG) for inspection. The airline assured passengers that all necessary checks would be made before the plane resumes service. The incident highlights the impact of unpredictable weather on aviation safety, with experts commending the pilot’s quick actions. Meanwhile, a hailstorm in Delhi disrupted airport operations, and the IMD issued an orange alert for the region.
