Israel has confirmed for the first time that it was responsible for an operation in September that destroyed many pagers used by Hezbollah in Lebanon. This information was revealed when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to his cabinet.
He mentioned that both the pager operation and actions against Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, went ahead despite some disagreements from top security and political leaders. This was the first time Israel admitted its involvement, according to an official who spoke to CNN.
The decision to let the Israeli media know about Netanyahu’s comments shows another twist in the ongoing political challenges within Israel. The media took Netanyahu’s words as a hint of criticism towards the military and intelligence heads, and Yoav Gallant, the Defense Minister, whom Netanyahu had recently dismissed.
Currently, the Israeli government is also dealing with several criminal investigations, which include accusations of sharing false intelligence with international reporters. The Prime Minister’s Office has denied any misconduct in these matters.
