Italy and Spain have deployed naval ships to assist the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla after it was targeted in a series of drone attacks in the Mediterranean Sea. The flotilla, consisting of around 50 civilian boats carrying humanitarian aid and activists, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, aims to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.
On Tuesday night, several vessels came under assault from Israeli drones that dropped stun grenades and unidentified objects near the boats, causing explosions and severe communication disruptions. Activists have condemned these attacks as a dangerous escalation and an intimidation tactic by Israel.
In response, Italy dispatched its first navy frigate on Wednesday, followed by a second ship on Thursday. Spain also announced it is sending a military vessel from Cartagena to safeguard and assist the flotilla.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto urged flotilla participants to consider handing over aid to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem for distribution in Gaza, citing safety concerns over entering contested waters.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to upholding international law and protecting their citizens on the mission. The flotilla continues to sail in Greek territorial waters while preparing to enter international waters.
