Chicago – August 27, 2025

A federal judge has dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Maryland’s entire federal judiciary, delivering a forceful ruling that condemned the case as “potentially calamitous.”

U.S. District Judge Thomas Cullen, appointed by President Donald Trump, sharply criticized the administration’s rhetoric targeting the judiciary, noting that recent White House officials had referred to judges as “rogue,” “unhinged,” and “crooked.”

The lawsuit stemmed from an order by Maryland’s district court chief judge, which halted the immediate deportation of migrants contesting their removals. The Justice Department argued that the automatic pause obstructed the president’s authority to enforce immigration laws and sought a court order to block it.

Judge Cullen ruled that allowing the suit to proceed would contradict established legal precedent, violate constitutional traditions, and undermine the rule of law.

The case, filed in June, marked a dramatic escalation in the administration’s ongoing conflict with the federal judiciary, as the Justice Department had grown increasingly critical of court decisions blocking Trump’s policies. The administration has already filed an appeal following the dismissal.
