Navy and Air Force Software Projects Worth $800 Million Cancelled

The US Navy and Air Force are on the verge of canceling two massive software projects that have been in development for 12 years, costing over $800 million. These projects aimed to modernize the military’s outdated human resources systems. However, officials have put the projects on hold, seeking to give other companies, like Salesforce and Palantir, a chance to win similar contracts.

This move is unusual, especially considering the significant time and money invested in these projects. The decision may lead to a costly redo, wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. The Trump administration has vowed to eliminate government waste and abuse, but some of its actions have complicated these efforts. For instance, the Pentagon’s inspector general was fired, and an executive order prioritizes speed over oversight in defense acquisitions.

The Department of Government Efficiency, created by Trump, claims to have canceled over $14 billion in Defense Department contracts. However, with high-level vacancies in the Navy and Air Force, oversight of the Pentagon’s contracting process is limited. This raises concerns about the responsible use of taxpayer dollars and the potential for further waste.
