Chicago – December 15, 2025

Los Angeles authorities are investigating an apparent homicide at a Brentwood residence owned by renowned filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the case. The investigation remains active, and officials have not publicly confirmed the identities of the two individuals found dead inside the home.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman deceased inside the upscale West Los Angeles property. The home is located in Brentwood, a neighborhood known for housing numerous high-profile figures in the entertainment industry.

According to the law enforcement official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, investigators believe the victims may have suffered stab wounds. A family member is reportedly being questioned as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities emphasized that details remain preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progresses.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the case. LAPD Capt. Mike Bland described the situation as an “apparent homicide” under investigation, underscoring that detectives are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. As of now, Los Angeles authorities have not officially confirmed the names of the deceased.

Rob Reiner, 78, is a celebrated figure in Hollywood, widely regarded as one of the most influential directors of the late 20th century. His filmography includes critically acclaimed and culturally iconic works such as This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, and The Princess Bride. Reiner’s films have earned widespread recognition for their storytelling, humor, and enduring popularity.

Before becoming a successful director, Reiner rose to fame as an actor. His portrayal of Michael “Meathead” Stivic on Norman Lear’s groundbreaking 1970s television series All in the Family made him a household name. The role earned him two Emmy Awards and positioned him as a prominent voice in American television.

The news has prompted reactions from figures connected to Reiner’s long career. Relatives of legendary producer Norman Lear, who died in 2023, released a statement expressing deep sorrow. Lear and Reiner shared a close professional and personal bond that spanned decades.

“Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world,” the Lear family said in a statement. They added that Lear would have wanted people to remember Reiner and his wife Michele for their commitment to art, activism, philanthropy, and family.

As investigators continue their work, authorities urge the public to refrain from speculation. Further information is expected to be released once identities are officially confirmed and next steps in the investigation are determined.
