Chicago – September 20, 2025

Portugal has announced that it will officially recognise the State of Palestine, joining a growing list of European nations pushing for a political solution to the decades-long conflict. The decision was confirmed by the Portuguese government on Friday, calling it a step toward peace, justice, and stability in the Middle East.

Lisbon said the recognition reflects its commitment to a two-state solution, where Israel and Palestine coexist side by side as independent nations. Portuguese officials stressed that the move aims to add diplomatic weight to efforts at ending the cycle of violence and reviving stalled peace talks.

Prime Minister António Costa noted that the recognition is not directed against Israel but rather intended to support Palestinians’ right to self-determination. He urged both sides to return to dialogue and reaffirmed Portugal’s opposition to violence against civilians.

Portugal’s decision comes at a time when more EU members are openly reconsidering their stance on Palestine. Analysts believe Lisbon’s step could encourage other Western countries to follow suit, potentially reshaping diplomatic pressure in the region’s longstanding dispute.
