President Donald Trump is set to visit Western North Carolina on Friday to meet with locals affected by Hurricane Helene. The hurricane hit the region in late September, destroying large areas and killing over 100 people in North Carolina alone.
The federal government’s response to the disaster has been under scrutiny, with some residents still living in tents and campers despite freezing temperatures. Thousands more have been staying in hotel rooms funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), but faced the possibility of being forced out earlier this month.
Local leaders, including Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, have praised President Trump’s commitment to the region’s recovery. “President Trump’s visit on Friday is welcome news for the thousands of families dealing with uncertainty,” said Tillis. “They need a Rebuilder-in-Chief who can cut through red tape and get folks what they need quickly.”
President Trump’s visit aims to bring attention to the ongoing recovery efforts and provide support to those affected. Local residents are hopeful that the president’s visit will bring much-needed aid and assistance to the region.
