Pro-democracy activists and labor groups staged a massive nationwide protest on Saturday, holding over 300 events across 44 states and Washington, D.C. The protests were in response to the Trump administration’s push for Texas to redraw its congressional map in favor of Republicans. Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke was among the prominent speakers at the Texas event, where he declared, “They do this because they are afraid. They fear this power they see here today.”

The protests were also sparked by the recent exodus of over 50 Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to prevent Republicans from having the quorum needed to vote on the redistricting plan. Many of these lawmakers have been staying in Illinois, which was also a site of protests on Saturday. By being in Illinois, the Texas lawmakers are out of reach of civil arrest warrants that could be enforced within Texas.

The nationwide protests demonstrate the widespread opposition to the Trump administration’s efforts to redraw the congressional map in Texas. Drucilla Tigner, executive director of the pro-democracy coalition Texas For All, emphasized the significance of the protests, highlighting the tens of thousands of people who attended the events. The protests underscore the ongoing debate over voting rights and representation in the United States.
