Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to speak with former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about the whereabouts of Austin Tice, an American veteran and journalist who disappeared in Syria 12 years ago. This decision follows a heartfelt plea from Tice’s mother, who wrote to Putin asking for his help.
During a press conference, Putin shared that he plans to meet with Assad, who recently visited Moscow. Although Putin expressed some doubts about Assad’s ability to provide information regarding Tice’s disappearance, he committed to addressing the issue. “We understand what the situation was 12 years ago when acts of hostilities were ongoing from both sides,” Putin said, indicating the complexity of finding answers after so many years.
Austin Tice went missing while reporting from a war zone in Syria. Despite the challenges, his family has never stopped looking for him. The U.S. State Department has intensified efforts to find Tice, even offering a $10 million reward for information leading to his release.
Tice’s mother’s letter to Putin highlights the family’s desperation and hope during the holiday season. She emphasized the significance of Putin’s influence and connections with the Syrian government, which could be crucial in their ongoing search to bring Austin back home safely.
