Rubio Faces Tough Questions on Foreign Policy Decisions
Secretary of State Marco Rubio had heated interactions with Democratic senators during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Tuesday. Lawmakers pressed him on Trump-era policies related to Russia, foreign aid cuts, and refugee treatment. Rubio defended actions such as slashing the foreign aid budget and dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), prompting criticism from senators who had previously supported his confirmation.
Senators Express Regret Over Rubio’s Leadership
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) voiced disappointment in Rubio’s performance, saying he had expected him to champion democracy and human rights but instead saw him enabling the gutting of critical aid programs. Van Hollen cited the closure of food programs in Sudan and slammed Rubio for prioritizing white South African refugees while turning away others already approved. He bluntly stated that he regretted voting for Rubio’s appointment as secretary of state.
Rubio Claps Back as Republicans Rally Behind Him
Rubio fired back at Van Hollen, mocking his visit to El Salvador and accusing him of meeting with a gang member, an accusation the man’s lawyers deny. Van Hollen objected, calling the claim unfounded. While Democrats grilled Rubio over the administration’s engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Republican members, including Chairman Jim Risch, defended the administration’s record, citing diplomatic wins like hostage releases and efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
