Chicago – September 15, 2025

President Donald Trump announced on September 15, 2025, that a deal has been reached with China regarding TikTok, potentially allowing the app to remain operational in the United States.

The Trump administration, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, finalized a framework agreement that sets the stage for TikTok’s ownership to transition to U.S. control. This resolves a yearslong effort that began under Trump’s first term, aiming to address national security concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ownership.

The deal emerged after intense talks in Madrid between U.S. and Chinese officials focusing on trade and TikTok’s future. Trump praised the progress of the talks on Truth Social, emphasizing that the agreement involves “a certain company that young people in our country very much wanted to save.” He also announced plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping to finalize the deal.

This deal comes just days before the deadline for TikTok to divest its U.S. operations or face a ban, as mandated by bipartisan legislation citing security risks. The administration has postponed enforcement several times, and this new agreement marks a major development in the app’s uncertain U.S. status.
