President Donald Trump visited federal officers in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, declaring his crime crackdown in the nation’s capital a success. Trump brought pizza and hamburgers to the U.S. Park Police headquarters as a gesture of support for the officers. He had initially planned to go on patrol with law enforcement, but the ride-along didn’t happen.

Trump’s crime crackdown began last week when he declared a public safety emergency in response to a perceived violent crime wave in the city. As part of the crackdown, Trump deployed National Guard soldiers and federal agents to the streets and took temporary control of the city’s police department. The crackdown has included increased stop-and-frisk operations, federal patrols in residential neighborhoods, and reports of people being stopped without explanation.

Despite resident complaints about heavy-handed tactics, Trump expressed confidence in the federal response, telling officers that Washington is “on the rebound.” He also promised to make the capital city “the best ever.” The move has sparked controversy, with some questioning the president’s assertion of power and the impact on the community.
