Trump Putin Meeting in Alaska Focuses on Ukraine Crisis

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are meeting in Alaska today to discuss a potential ceasefire deal in Ukraine. Trump is eager to broker a truce in the 3-1/2-year-old war, which would boost his reputation as a global peacemaker and possibly even earn him a Nobel Peace Prize. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European allies are worried that Trump might compromise Ukraine’s interests and force it to make territorial concessions.

The summit is a significant win for Putin, as it demonstrates that Western efforts to isolate Russia have been unsuccessful. Putin has long wanted to meet with Trump face-to-face, without Ukraine being part of the discussion. The meeting will take place at 11 a.m. Alaska time (1900 GMT) at a Cold War-era air force base in Alaska. This will be the first face-to-face talks between Trump and Putin since Trump’s return to the White House.

Trump had previously claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, but he has since acknowledged that the conflict is more complex than he initially thought. The outcome of the summit is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the meeting has significant implications for Ukraine’s future and the global balance of power.
