Trump’s Tariff Threat to BRICS-Aligning Countries
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional US 10% tariff on countries that align themselves with the BRICS group’s “Anti-American policies”. This move comes after the BRICS bloc condemned the rise in tariffs, sparking a trade war threat between the US and the BRICS nations. Trump made this announcement in a post on Truth Social, stating there would be “no exceptions” to this policy ¹ ².

BRICS Summit and Global Trade Implications
The BRICS summit, currently underway in Rio de Janeiro, has seen leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as other member nations, discuss global trade and economic cooperation. The group has expressed interest in reforming global financial institutions and reducing reliance on the US dollar. Trump’s tariff threat may escalate tensions between the US and BRICS nations, potentially affecting global trade.

Potential Impact on Countries
Countries like Indonesia, whose senior economic minister is attending the BRICS summit and heading to the US for tariff talks, may be impacted by Trump’s policy. India’s foreign ministry has not commented on the issue. With over 30 nations expressing interest in joining BRICS, Trump’s move may influence their decisions.
