Iran’s Nuclear Program Accelerates, Raising Concerns
The United Nations atomic watchdog has sounded the alarm on Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned that Iran has enough uranium to develop nearly five nuclear weapons if enriched further.
According to Grossi, Iran possesses around 440 pounds of near-weapons-grade uranium, enriched to 60% purity. This is just shy of the 90% purity required to develop a nuclear bomb. To put this into perspective, roughly 92 pounds of weapons-grade uranium is enough to create one nuclear bomb.
Grossi expressed concerns that Iran has increased its production of uranium enriched to 60% purity levels, from 15 pounds to over 65 pounds per month. “They are pressing the gas pedal,” Grossi told reporters.
The IAEA’s warning comes just two days after President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Trump’s administration has historically taken a hardline stance on Iran’s nuclear program, with some conservative allies urging him to continue his “maximum pressure” campaign.
However, Grossi hinted that the new administration may be open to diplomacy, citing statements from Trump and others. This could potentially lead to a new agreement, although it’s unclear what form this would take.
The situation is complex, with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly prohibiting the development of nuclear weapons. However, this ban may not necessarily limit Tehran’s nuclear program. As the situation unfolds, the international community will be watching closely.
