Russia has launched one of its biggest aerial attacks on Ukraine this year, firing 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles overnight. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the attack mainly targeted western regions of the country, where military aid from Ukraine’s Western allies is typically delivered and stored. Unfortunately, the strikes resulted in at least one death and 15 injuries, according to officials.

This attack is particularly significant as it occurred during a renewed push for a peace settlement, led by the US. US President Donald Trump recently discussed the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Russia’s attack has raised concerns about the prospects for peace.

The attack is Russia’s third-largest aerial assault this year in terms of drones fired and eighth-largest in terms of missiles. Most Russian attacks have targeted civilian areas, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The international community is urging Russia to cease its aggression and work towards a peaceful resolution.
