D’Angelo, the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer renowned for his soulful sound and iconic music, has passed away at 51 after a courageous battle with cancer, his family confirmed. Known for blending classic funk, gospel, jazz, and hip-hop, D’Angelo’s artistry left a lasting impact on music and culture.
Born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia, he first gained recognition at 16 after winning an amateur night at “Showtime at the Apollo.” His 1995 debut album, “Brown Sugar,” achieved platinum status and helped define the neo-soul genre.
He further rose to fame with his 2000 album “Voodoo,” which included the provocative single “Untitled (How Does It Feel?).” The album and single earned him Grammy Awards.
After a long hiatus, he released “Black Messiah” in 2014 with his band The Vanguard. A private individual and father to a son with late singer Angie Stone, D’Angelo’s legacy is celebrated for its rich musicality and profound influence on artists worldwide.
