Chicago – October 26, 2025

U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the House Democratic leader, has officially endorsed Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race, ending months of suspense just 11 days before the November 4 election.

Jeffries acknowledged that despite “areas of principled disagreement” between him and Mamdani, the Democratic primary winner, the time calls for party unity against what he described as an “existential” threat posed by President Donald Trump. He praised Mamdani’s focus on addressing the city’s affordability crisis and his commitment to serving all New Yorkers, including those who may not support him.

Jeffries, a Brooklyn congressman, also welcomed Mamdani’s pledge to keep Jessica Tisch as police commissioner, highlighting it as a positive step towards public safety. Mamdani expressed gratitude, emphasizing the campaign’s goal to unite New Yorkers and fight Trump’s authoritarianism.

This endorsement adds significant support from a leading Democratic figure as Mamdani faces a competitive general election against independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
