Pritzker, a Democrat eyeing higher office, framed the measure as a stand against Trump administration policies targeting cities like Chicago. “Dropping your kid off at day care, going to the doctor, or attending classes should not be a life-altering task,” he stated during the signing in Chicago’s Little Village. The law also restricts these institutions from sharing immigration status unless legally required, mandating protocols by early 2026.
This counters aggressive federal raids under DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, amid Trump’s deportation push despite falling Chicago crime rates. Republicans, including White House spokespeople, criticized it as unconstitutional and prioritizing immigrants over public safety. Advocates hail it as vital for community access to essential services.
