Chicago – May 03, 2025

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese claimed a historic victory on Saturday, becoming the first Australian leader in 21 years to secure a second consecutive term. Speaking to supporters in Sydney, Albanese emphasized that Australians had chosen to confront global challenges “the Australian way,” by looking after one another and building for the future without borrowing ideas from abroad. “We do not seek our inspiration overseas. We find it right here in our values and in our people,” he said.

Albanese’s center-left Labor Party distanced itself from the style of U.S. President Donald Trump, a contrast highlighted during the campaign. Labor had criticized Albanese’s main opponent, conservative Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton, branding him “DOGE-y Dutton” and accusing his party of mimicking Trump’s approach to governance. Dutton conceded defeat on election night, acknowledging his party’s loss and conceding his own parliamentary seat, which he had held for 24 years.

The election results marked a significant boost for Labor, which was projected to increase its parliamentary majority. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations to Albanese on his reelection, underscoring the international attention on the Australian election outcome.

This victory signals a renewed mandate for Albanese’s government amid ongoing global uncertainties and domestic challenges, with voters favoring stability and a distinctly Australian path forward over the populist style associated with Trump.
