On Sunday, rioters attacked a hotel in Rotherham, UK, that housed asylum seekers, marking some of the worst social unrest in years. The violence followed the stabbing of three young girls in Southport, northwest England, earlier in the week. Far-right groups spread false claims that the attacker was an immigrant to stir anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant protests. Police confirmed the suspect was born in Britain.
The Holiday Inn Express Hotel in Rotherham was stormed by protesters, with reports of it being set on fire. Rioters threw objects and sprayed fire extinguishers at police officers. Some waved England flags and chanted, clashing with the officers. One injured officer in riot gear was seen being carried away.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violent protests, noting that at least 147 people were arrested since Saturday night. He warned that those involved would face legal consequences and stressed that the rioters do not represent the country.
