Chicago – December 21, 2024
The Biden administration announced on Friday that it will cancel $4.28 billion in student loan debt for nearly 55,000 public service workers, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
This new debt relief brings the total forgiven for public service workers to about $78 billion for nearly 1.1 million people.
The White House also shared that nearly 5 million individuals have received student debt relief under President Joe Biden. This is part of Biden’s ongoing effort to fulfill a campaign promise from 2020 to provide debt relief to millions of Americans before he leaves office in January.
The student loan forgiveness aims to support workers in public service jobs, including teachers, healthcare workers, and first responders, by reducing their financial burden. This move is part of a larger initiative to address the growing student loan crisis in the country.
