The Isra’ and Mi’raj, the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Night Journey and Ascension to the heavens, stand as extraordinary signs of Allah’s greatness and the truth of the Prophet’s message. These events showcase Allah’s boundless power and elevated status above all creation. In the Quran, Allah describes this journey:
“Glorified be He (Allah) Who took His slave (Muhammad) for a journey by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram (in Makkah) to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem), the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, so that We might show him of Our signs. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.” [Al-Isra’ 17:1]
This miraculous journey reminds us of Allah’s mercy and the special honor given to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
What Happened During Isra’ and Mi’raj?
Authentic narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) tell us he was taken up through the seven heavens. The gates of each heaven were opened for him, and he eventually reached a place where he spoke with Allah directly. During this moment, Allah commanded the five daily prayers.
The Isra’ and Mi’raj are historical events and profound lessons in faith and devotion, emphasizing the importance of prayer in Islam.
No Special Celebrations for the Night in Sunnah
While the Isra’ and Mi’raj hold great significance, Muslims are not instructed to celebrate this night or perform specific acts of worship to mark it. Neither the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) nor his Companions ever celebrated this event or singled it out in any special way.
While, no specific acts of worships are encouraged, praying in solitude like any normal night is permitted without labelling this specific event is not found in Sunnah. Muslims are encouraged to follow the Prophet’s example and focus on the lessons of faith and prayer taught through this remarkable journey of Miraj.
