Chicago – November 17, 2024
The Chicago City Council recently voted unanimously against Mayor Brandon Johnson’s proposal to increase property taxes by $300 million. This decision occurred during a special meeting held this week as the city approaches a deadline to approve a new budget within two months.
Residents of Chicago, including supporters of President-elect Donald Trump wearing MAGA gear, openly criticized the mayor at the meeting. They expressed their dissatisfaction with his policies, especially those favoring illegal immigrants over local citizens. Some residents argued that the mayor’s policies are causing citizens to suffer financially.
During the council meeting, people voiced their concerns about the mayor spending millions on assisting over 35,000 migrants with food, clothing, and housing. This expenditure comes at a time when the city is facing a nearly $1 billion budget deficit.
Mayor Johnson argued that the proposed tax increase was necessary to prevent layoffs of essential city workers, including police officers and firefighters. However, the City Council’s rejection of the tax proposal was a clear indication of widespread opposition. Discussions to find alternative solutions involving new revenue sources and federal funds began last weekend.
