Chicago – August 17, 2024
Chicago is preparing for the arrival of several hundred migrants before the Democratic National Convention, even though earlier fears of up to 25,000 migrants have been reduced. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s team now anticipates between 750 and 1,000 new arrivals next week. This change in numbers comes as a relief to city officials.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has confirmed that his state is sending buses with migrants to Chicago to help ease the burden on Texas border towns overwhelmed by illegal migration. His office stated that they will continue this practice until federal authorities, including President Biden and Border Czar Harris, take more decisive action to secure the border.
Initially, Chicago’s Deputy Mayor for Immigration, Beatriz Ponce de León, warned of possibly receiving up to 25,000 migrants. However, she recently updated that estimate, significantly lowering the expected number. This has brought some reassurance as the city gears up for the national political event. The migrants being sent to Chicago are part of Texas’ efforts to distribute the economic and social challenges posed by migration more evenly across the country.
