Chicago – June 07, 2025
Coco Gauff, the 21-year-old American tennis sensation, won her second Grand Slam title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling French Open women’s singles final. This marks Gauff’s first French Open title and makes her the first American to win the event since Serena Williams in 2015.
The final, featuring the world’s top two players, was the first Grand Slam women’s final between the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players since 2018. After Sabalenka claimed the first set 7-6, Gauff stormed back to win the second set 6-2 and clinched victory with a 6-4 score in the final set. Gauff collapsed in joy on the red clay as Sabalenka’s final volley missed the line.
Gauff reached the final after impressive victories over fellow American Madison Keys in the quarterfinals and underdog Lois Boisson, ranked No. 361, in the semifinals. Sabalenka, who became No. 1 last year after winning the Australian and U.S. Opens, overcame Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.
Gauff’s victory follows a successful year for American women’s tennis, with Keys winning the Australian Open earlier this year. The French Open men’s final, between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, will take place on Sunday.
