Chicago – November 15, 2024
In response to the recent conflict in Gaza, ten non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have proposed a binding resolution aimed at halting Israel’s military actions, which the country describes as a defensive war against Hamas, a group recognized by the U.S. as a terrorist organization.
This proposal comes amidst a period of strained relations between U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Israel’s offensive that began on October 7, 2023.
Observers at the U.N. are concerned that President Biden might use this opportunity to express disapproval of Netanyahu’s policies by supporting the resolution. This speculation is reminiscent of an incident in 2016 when President Obama chose not to veto a resolution critical of Israel just before Donald Trump assumed the presidency.
The current situation could potentially send a strong message to Netanyahu’s administration if the Biden administration decides to back the proposed resolution.
