In 2024, a record number of journalists were killed, with Israel being responsible for most of those deaths, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The CPJ shared this information in their annual report on Wednesday.
The report revealed that at least 124 journalists were killed in 18 countries last year, making it the deadliest year for journalists since the CPJ began tracking these numbers over 30 years ago. The previous deadliest year was 2007, when 113 journalists lost their lives, many of them due to the war in Iraq.
Jodie Ginsberg, the CPJ’s chief, said, “Today is the most dangerous time to be a journalist in CPJ’s history.” She also added that the war in Gaza had a huge impact on journalists, showing how global efforts to protect journalists in conflict zones are failing. However, Gaza isn’t the only place where journalists face danger.
According to the CPJ, at least 85 journalists were killed by the Israeli military during the war in Gaza in 2024, with 82 of them being Palestinian journalists. The attacks on journalists in Gaza have continued into 2025, with reporter Ahmad al-Shayah being one of six people killed in a drone strike on January 15.
