No one quite knows what would happen if Joe Biden stepped aside, but many Democrats believe Vice President Kamala Harris would quickly become the nominee.
For weeks, informal talks about replacing Biden have been going on behind the scenes. The uncertainty about the process has made many Democrats hesitate to oppose Biden’s candidacy, fearing an even messier outcome. Internal polls showing Harris could boost Democratic enthusiasm and help down-ballot races are circulating. Many believe she could quickly assemble a campaign and actively challenge Donald Trump.
While Biden’s aides say he plans to return to the campaign trail next week after recovering from COVID-19, many are holding off on discussing what-ifs. However, if Biden’s plans change, leading Democratic politicians and operatives told CNN they can’t realistically see any other outcome than Harris becoming the nominee.
The possibility of Harris making a more energetic case against Trump is gaining traction, as Democrats prepare for potential changes in the race.
