Two leading lawmakers from the DOGE political group, Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa and Representative Michael Cloud from Texas, are proposing a new law called the “Return to Sender Act.” This law aims to take back $3 billion that was originally given to help the United States Postal Service (USPS) switch to electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a bigger plan by former President Joe Biden to reduce inflation.
The $3 billion was supposed to help USPS buy 50,000 new electric delivery trucks from a defense contractor in South Carolina, named Oshkosh. However, things haven’t been going smoothly. As of last November, Oshkosh was way behind schedule, delivering only 93 trucks out of the planned 50,000.
The slow progress and some problems with how much the trucks are costing led to the proposal of this new bill. The idea is to get some of the money back because the project isn’t going as planned. The lawmakers believe this money could be used better elsewhere to help control inflation.
