Three former Republican leaders have decided to support Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, despite being members of the Republican Party. These leaders are former U.S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum from Kansas, former Kansas state senator and Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, and Deanell Reece Tacha, a retired federal judge. They shared their decision and their thoughts in a statement given to Fox News Digital on Thursday.
They expressed disappointment in the current state of the Republican Party, stating it has moved away from the values of past Republican leaders like Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bob Dole. They emphasized that their choice was not easy, describing the current political situation as presenting a “stark choice” between continuing in the current direction or voting for a change.
While acknowledging that no candidate perfectly matches their views, they believe Vice President Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz best represent the spirit of cooperation and progress that Kansas has historically valued. This decision follows their previous actions, as they have supported Democratic candidates in other recent elections too.
