Chicago – September 30, 2024
The Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia have taken legal action to stop a new rule in Georgia that requires manual counting of ballots. They filed a lawsuit on Monday, concerned about the rule’s impact on the upcoming presidential election.
This rule was approved on September 20 by three Republican members of Georgia’s election board, despite opposition from two other members and against the advice of Chris Carr, the Republican Attorney General of Georgia.
The rule mandates that in each of Georgia’s 2,400 voting precincts, three people must count the ballots by hand to confirm their totals match those produced by counting machines. Any discrepancies must be resolved and documented by a poll manager.
The lawsuit claims that this rule could cause delays in large counties and make it difficult for election officials to adjust to new procedures quickly. Additionally, it raises concerns about the potential for compromised ballot security if the rule is implemented.
