Chicago – August 16, 2024
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, has a campaign representative visiting Michigan to talk with Arab-American and Muslim leaders. These leaders are urging the U.S. to call for a cease-fire in Gaza. Julie Chavez Rodriguez, who manages the campaign for Harris and her vice-presidential partner, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, is the representative meeting with these leaders.
Osama Siblani, who publishes the Arab American News in Dearborn, mentioned he’s set to meet Rodriguez on Thursday. However, details about the meeting location or other participants weren’t shared. Sources say Abbas Alawieh, a key figure in pushing for a cease-fire and an uncommitted delegate at the Democratic National Convention, is likely to attend the meeting too.
Rodriguez is also expected to meet Jewish community leaders in the Detroit area. This is all happening as the Democratic National Convention in Chicago approaches next Monday, where protests supporting a cease-fire and a stop to U.S. arms sales to Israel are anticipated. The Harris campaign has not yet commented on these meetings.
