India is observing a seven-day mourning period to honor former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.
Singh, known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, will be cremated on Saturday. Government buildings are flying the national flag at half-staff, and all cultural and entertainment events have been canceled.
Singh’s body lies in a glass casket draped with the Indian flag as mourners, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pay their respects. Modi visited Singh’s home to offer condolences and later praised his honesty and simplicity in a video message, saying Singh “saved the country from an economic crisis” and left a lasting legacy.
Singh, a respected economist and mild-mannered leader, served as India’s prime minister for 10 years and was chosen for the role by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has urged Modi to hold Singh’s last rites at a site where a memorial can be built to honor his contributions. Kharge described Singh as a “great son of India” deeply revered by the nation.
