Israeli forces have attacked five different schools in Gaza over the past eight days, killing many people who were taking shelter there, according to Palestinian officials, medics, and rescuers.
The latest attack on Sunday hit the United Nations-run Abu Oreiban school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing at least 17 people and injuring around 80. Most of the victims were women and children, according to Palestinian Civil Defence. This attack followed a deadlier one on July 9, which struck tents near the entrance of Khan Younis’s al-Awda school, killing at least 29 people.
Two days earlier, another strike hit the church-run Holy Family school in Gaza City, killing four people.
The violence in Gaza’s schools-turned-shelters has been a recurring issue throughout the war, with Israel accusing Hamas of using these locations for military purposes.
