In a surprising turn of events, left-wing parties are expected to win the most seats in France’s parliamentary elections, according to exit polls on Sunday. This marks a significant defeat for Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party, as voters seem to have rallied against her far-right policies.
French voters also appeared displeased with President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party, though the backlash wasn’t as severe as some experts predicted. The exit polls conducted by Ipsos Talan suggest that the New Popular Front, a leftist coalition led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, could secure up to 215 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. Macron’s centrist bloc is projected to win up to 170 seats, while the National Rally is expected to get as many as 152 seats.
These results leave uncertainty about which group will form the next government. Despite the shake-up, Macron’s position as president remains secure, as France’s political system separates the roles of president and prime minister.
