Mexico is launching a new app called “Alert Button” to help Mexican migrants in the U.S. who might face deportation. The app will allow users to quickly notify their family and the nearest Mexican consulate if they are about to be detained.
Mexican officials say it’s part of their effort to ensure citizens get fair treatment in the U.S. before being deported.
The app is being developed in response to expected mass deportations after President-elect Trump takes office on January 20. His administration has promised stricter border control and a large deportation program.
Mexico estimates there are 11.5 million Mexicans with legal residency in the U.S. and 4.8 million without proper documents. The app, set to launch in January, sends alerts with one tap and connects users to any of the 53 Mexican consulates in the U.S.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente said the app has been tested and works well. Mexico has also hired 329 legal representatives and opened a 24-hour hotline to help migrants understand their rights and get legal support.
