Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace laureate renowned for his microcredit initiatives, assumed leadership of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday. His appointment follows weeks of unrest, leading Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and seek refuge in India.
Known as the “banker to the poor,” Yunus founded Grameen Bank, which earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for alleviating poverty through small loans to rural communities overlooked by traditional banks. As chief adviser of the caretaker government, Yunus aims to restore stability after severe violence and oversee new parliamentary elections.
In a televised address, Yunus pledged a return to democracy, justice, human rights, and freedom of expression for all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. Upon returning from medical treatment in Paris earlier in the day, Yunus expressed his intention to govern with the support and input of student supporters.
