Lord Peter Mandelson, the newly appointed UK ambassador to the United States, is preparing to strengthen the long-standing “special relationship” between the two countries. But first, he wants to clear up past remarks about President Donald Trump.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Mandelson addressed comments he made in 2019 when he called Trump “a danger to the world.” Now, he says he was wrong.
“I believe my remarks about President Trump were mistaken,” he said. “Times have changed, and so have opinions about the president.” He added that Trump has “won fresh respect,” including from him, and promised to focus on that as the UK’s ambassador in Washington.
His comments come as reports suggest that his appointment might face opposition from the White House. However, Mandelson dismissed these claims.
“I haven’t heard anything from the president, the White House, or anyone in his team that suggests there will be any issues with my appointment,” he said.
Despite his reassurances, some question how strong the UK-U.S. relationship will remain. This uncertainty has grown following statements from Trump’s campaign and his close ally, billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk.
