Chicago – September 01, 2025

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 has struck eastern Afghanistan, causing widespread damage and killing over 800 people, according to the UN’s humanitarian agency. The earthquake hit at a shallow depth of just 8 kilometers (5 miles), which makes it even more destructive. It was felt in many areas, from Kabul in Afghanistan to Islamabad in Pakistan.

The hardest-hit areas are remote, making it difficult for rescue teams to assess the damage. Helicopters are being used to try to reach people in places that are hard to access. Many people are feared to be trapped under collapsed buildings, and reports suggest that entire villages have been completely destroyed.

Eyewitnesses describe entire communities being flattened by the force of the earthquake. The Taliban government has called on the international community to provide urgent help as they continue to search for survivors.
