Pakistani and Afghan forces exchanged heavy fire across multiple locations along the border late Saturday, intensifying already simmering tensions between the two neighbors. The clashes erupted following a recent Pakistani airstrike in Kabul, which Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration cited as the reason for their “retaliatory” assaults on Pakistani posts. Security officials from both sides confirmed that exchanges took place at more than six sites, with key points identified in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.
Afghan officials claimed their forces had captured three Pakistani border posts during the operation, while Pakistani authorities reported that several Afghan positions were destroyed in response.
“Pakistani security forces retaliated with full force against unprovoked gunfire,” a security source stated, sharing footage of artillery illuminating the night sky. Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi denounced the Afghan attack as an “infringement of international law,” asserting that Pakistani forces had given a “befitting response”.
The border—spanning 2,600 kilometers—remains a hotspot for tensions, with both sides accusing each other of provoking unrest and supporting hostile militants. Calls for restraint have come from regional actors as the situation remains volatile, with no confirmation on whether hostilities have ceased.
