Palestinian health officials have shared a video that they say shows the truth about an event where 15 rescue workers were killed in the southern Gaza Strip last month. Israel’s military had said that these vehicles were moving suspiciously towards their soldiers without any lights on March 23, leading them to open fire.
However, the video, released by the Palestine Red Crescent Society and found on a cellphone from one of the deceased paramedics, shows the rescue vehicles with their headlights and red emergency lights on. The video was taken inside one of these vehicles.
During the video, a lot of gunshots can be heard for several minutes. A man’s voice in the video says in Arabic, “Mom, forgive me. This is the path I chose, to help people.”
An Israeli military official, who didn’t want to be named, discussed the ongoing investigation with reporters. He mentioned that senior military officials were finishing up their investigation and would share the results with the chief of staff of the military on Sunday.
The official denied any claims that the soldiers shot the medics from close range or that they handcuffed the medics. He also said that the soldiers covered the bodies with a net and buried them under sand to keep wild animals from disturbing them. The missing crew was found more than a week later, on March 31, when rescue teams discovered the bodies of 14 Palestinian emergency responders and one person from the United Nations under a mound of sand.
