Chicago – August 20, 2024
Police clashed with protesters at the Israeli consulate in Chicago on Tuesday during a small but intense demonstration over the Gaza war. The protest, organized by a militant group, saw more than a dozen people arrested. At the same time, Democratic National Convention delegates were nominating Kamala Harris as their presidential candidate just two miles away.
Police outnumbered protesters at the consulate, located in Chicago’s Accenture Tower. Chanting and drumming, the crowd grew tense when someone burned an American flag, leading to a brief confrontation with a bystander who tried to save it. “You’re the enemy,” he told the masked protesters.
As the sun set, a small pro-Israel group also gathered nearby to chant. By 8 p.m., the protesters had left the consulate, but police continued making arrests as they dispersed down a nearby street.
