Pope Francis has condemned the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging an immediate ceasefire and the release of captives in his Christmas “Urbi et Orbi” address from the Vatican.
Speaking to a large crowd in Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope described the situation in Gaza as “extremely grave,” following Israel’s ongoing military operations that have resulted in over 45,000 Palestinian deaths and widespread destruction since October 7, 2023.
He called for urgent humanitarian aid to those suffering from hunger and war.
In addition to Gaza, Pope Francis appealed for peace in Ukraine, Sudan, and other conflict zones around the world, including Lebanon, Mali, and Haiti. He urged leaders and citizens alike to work toward resolving conflicts through dialogue and peaceful solutions.
“May the sound of arms be silenced in war-torn Ukraine,” the Pope said, stressing the need for a just and lasting peace.
This Christmas marked the 12th year of Pope Francis’ pontificate, and his message focused on the theme of hope. He encouraged people everywhere to come together, heal divisions, and promote peace in a world ravaged by violence and suffering.
The Pope’s call for peace resonated as a plea for unity and compassion during the festive season.
