President Donald Trump has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the deployment of National Guard troops to Chicago, aiming to increase military presence in Democratic-led cities under his administration’s expanding domestic operations. The Justice Department filed an emergency request seeking to overturn a recent federal judge’s ruling that halted the deployment, despite objections from local and state officials in Illinois.

Trump’s administration argues the troop deployment is crucial for protecting federal agents, particularly those involved in immigration enforcement, amid what it claims are threats and assaults during protests around immigration facilities. The administration invoked an uncommon federal statute that permits presidential authority to federalize state National Guard forces under declared rebellion or enforcement challenges.

However, a federal appeals court and district judge have blocked the deployment, citing a lack of evidence supporting claims of rebellion or sufficient justification for extensive federal troop use. The judge and the court found the administration’s portrayal of unrest unreliable and viewed the actions as an overreach of presidential power.

This case marks a significant legal confrontation over the limits of presidential authority in domestic troop use, with the Supreme Court now weighing the dispute as the Trump administration pushes for broader military roles in U.S. cities.
