Chicago – July 10, 2024
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has announced plans to create a new law to hold former President Trump accountable for his actions after the 2020 election.
Schumer’s proposed bill aims to classify Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election results as “unofficial,” which would remove the immunity protections from a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The ruling, issued on July 2, stated that a president has significant prosecutorial immunity for official acts performed while in office.
“American democracy stands today at a perilous crossroads,” Schumer said in a recent Senate floor speech, calling Trump’s actions “election subversion acts.”
Schumer also warned that if Trump is re-elected, the Supreme Court will continue to make “disastrous rulings,” and the events of January 6, 2021, will be seen as the start of chaos in the U.S.
